Madrid has been the capital of Spain since 1561 when Philip II of Spain moved his court there from Valladolid. Then Madrid was just a village with a population of 30,000; today is a cosmopolitan city with a lively life and a population of about 4 million. It boast the highest number of trees and green areas per inhabitant in the EU and is considered one of the top world destinations concerning art museums. The so callled Golden Triangle of Art (The Prado Museum, the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum and the Reina Sofia Museum) features one of the world's finest collection of European art showing works by Velazquez, Goya, Dali, Picasso, Greco and many others. Madrid is home to Real Madrid football club and its impresive stadium (Santiago Bernabeu). The historical centre starting from Puerta del Sol includes calle Alcala, calle Arenal, Plaza Mayor, the Opera Theatre and the Royal Palace. After sunset life goes on. Madrid never sleeps. Its nightlife is one of its main attractions. It is the most visited city in Spain and the fourth most visited in Europe and it is home to World Tourism Organization.
