El Hierro is the smallest, most isolated, southernmost and westernmost of the Canary Islands. Almost untouched by mass tourism it has managed to retain a flavour of times gone by. Old Castilian words that have almost been forgotten everywhere else are still in use here. Also known as the “Meridian Island” (La Isla del Meridiano) El Hierro meridian was used as the reference on maps since 1634 as it was the westernmost known place of the old world. It remain so until 1851 when it was replaced by the Greenwich meridian.
