The Foundation Rodríguez-Acosta (Rodríguez-Acosta Foundation) is a private non-profit organization of a cultural nature, which was founded in 1941 after the death of the painter José María Rodríguez-Acosta, who established the guidelines of the Foundation "To support any kind of scientific research and to encourage culture, to bring Granada up to date with human progress, encouraging those who are particularly interested". The Foundation's head office is located in a distinctive carmen (typical houses in Granada, surrounded with gardens) - an example of the typical architecture of Granada. This carmen is on the hill where the Muslim citadel of the Alhambra rests, and where the Instituto y Museo Gómez-Moreno (Gómez-Moreno Institute and Museum) also lie. This carmen, which was built at the beginning of last century (1914/1928), is near the Torres Bermejas (Bermejas Towers), close to the Alhambra, and gathers the most representative styles of Europe from the twenties and thirties. The building and its magnificent gardens are one of the top architectural complexes of this period, so they were declared a National Monument in 1982. The Gómez-Moreno Institute and Museum, which was founded in 1973, has a collection of works of art and archaeological findings, a library, and a specialist archive which were all legated by the family of one of Granada's scholars and archaeologists, Mr. Manuel Gómez-Moreno Martínez. |
